Candidates for Breast Lift Surgery
Many women notice the aesthetic alterations that occur in their breasts over time. These changes can negatively impact confidence and self-esteem levels, which in turn can lead to further insecurities and a diminished quality of life. Breast lift surgery can benefit women suffering from insecurities stemming from breast ptosis (sagging) as well as changes in shape or position. Candidates for breast lift surgery must be in good general health, be willing to quit smoking for at least four weeks before and after the surgery, and have realistic expectations of their results. Breast lift surgery may be performed as a stand-alone procedure or in combination with breast augmentation or reduction.
Treatment Options
During your consultation, Dr. Batra will examine your level of breast ptosis and discuss the techniques that will best meet your aesthetic goals. Breast lift surgery can benefit women experiencing:
- An aged breast appearance due to breast sagging
- Skin irritation due to excess skin
- Altered placement of the nipples
- Excess skin on and around the breasts
- Breasts that have lost a perky and youthful shape
Procedure Details
Breast lift surgery can be performed using one of three incision options, depending on your level of breast ptosis and the level of correction desired. Dr. Batra will discuss these incision options with you during your consultation.
Donut Incision
The donut incision involves an incision that encircles the darker portion of the nipple-areola complex. From here, excess skin is removed around that ring. This variation allows for minimized scarring as the scar will be hidden in the darker skin; however, this incision is not sufficient for women with significant sagging. Rather, the donut incision is ideal for women with mild to moderate sagging.
Lollipop Incision
The lollipop variation involves two incisions: the first is made around the areola (just like the donut incision), and the second is a vertical incision made from the bottom of the areola to the lower portion of the breast; these incisions look like a lollipop. This option allows for greater correction with minimal scarring.
Anchor Incision
The anchor incision is the most common option and allows for significant breast correction. Three incisions are made with this technique. The first two are the same as the lollipop incision; however, a third incision is made horizontally along the crease where the breast meets the chest. This variation will result in a higher level of postoperative scarring, but this is easy to cover with bras and bathing suits.
Recovery and Results
Regardless of your incision choice, your breast lift surgery is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia. You will be required to have someone to drive you home and stay with you through the first night. Bruising and swelling should be expected in the first few days, but oral pain medication will relieve any discomfort. A surgical bra is worn during your entire recovery to ensure proper healing, reduce swelling, and promote circulation.
Most patients return to work and normal activities after one week. Strenuous upper body exercises should be limited for at least a month or until your surgeon has cleared you. The results of your breast lift are long lasting and will be visible as soon as the swelling subsides.
